Perched high on a hill and visible from all over the island, the Citadel (Cittadella) looks just like a castle from your favorite storybook. Long, long ago – thousands of years in fact – people lived here, and every stone has a secret to tell. Imagine ancient warriors guarding the island, families walking the narrow streets, and magical creatures hiding in the gardens!
Inside this walled wonder, you’ll find old towers, secret tunnels, and tiny museums filled with treasures from the past. You can explore the Old Prison (don’t worry – it’s empty!), peek into grain silos, or discover how people lived, played, and worked a long time ago. There’s even a cathedral that looks like it’s made of gold, and views from the top that stretch out over the whole island like a giant map.
Keep your eyes open for hidden shrines, stone animals, and carved faces on the walls – some left behind by knights, others scratched in by mischievous soldiers!
Entrance to the citadel itself is free of charge however if you would like to visit one of the many museums inside, a fee will apply. Combo tickets can usually be purchased.
Closest Food & Beverage facilities can be found within the town of Victoria/Rabat.
Note that although the paving is smooth, allowing pushchair accessibility, there are a lot of steps throughout, making it a bit more challenging.
Entrance to the Cittadella and surrounding ditch is free however every museum within has its own separate fees
