No fortress in Malta has shaped the island’s history more profoundly than Fort St Angelo. Towering over the Grand Harbour from its commanding position at the tip of the Birgu peninsula, this iconic stronghold has stood as a sentinel of power, conflict, and resilience for centuries.

Once known as Castrum Maris (“castle-by-the-sea”), the site was already a fortified structure by 1274, valued by Sicily’s rulers as a safeguard of their control over Malta. With the arrival of the Order of St John in 1530, the fort was reborn. Renamed Fort St Angelo, it became the Knights’ headquarters and was transformed with advanced bastioned defences – a turning point in Maltese military architecture.

The fort played a decisive role in the Great Siege of 1565, withstanding relentless attacks and helping to secure victory against the Ottoman Empire. Over time, it continued to evolve – Carlos Grunenbergh’s 1689 enhancements brought powerful coastal artillery platforms, while the Royal Navy transformed the site into HMS Egmont, later HMS St Angelo, maintaining it as a key naval base through World War II, during which it endured 69 direct hits.

After centuries of occupation, the last foreign troops departed the fort in March 1979, cementing its legacy in Malta’s path to independence.

Today, Fort St Angelo offers a captivating mix of immersive exhibitions, traditional displays, and sweeping panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. Visitors can explore its layered history, from medieval stronghold to modern military icon, and walk through the very halls where the fate of Malta was once decided.
