Step into a real Ice Age adventure at Għar Dalam, Malta’s oldest prehistoric site! This amazing cave takes you back half a million years, to a time when strange animals like dwarf elephants, hippopotamuses, and giant deer roamed the islands. Inside the cave and its museum, you’ll see rows and rows of real animal bones – all found right here!
In the Joseph Baldacchino Hall, you’ll discover one of the last remaining Victorian-style displays in Europe. Then head to the George Zammit Maempel Hall, where fun and easy exhibits show how these animals ended up in the cave, carried by rivers long ago during the Ice Age.
As you walk through the cave itself, you’ll spot the actual bones still lying in the ground – just as they were found! The layers of earth tell a story, from when only animals lived here to the first people who arrived in Malta over 7,000 years ago!
Outside, wander through a lovely garden filled with native Maltese plants and trees. Għar Dalam is also a protected nature site, home to rare animals like the tiny cave woodlouse and horseshoe bats. It’s a place where science, nature, and history come alive – perfect for young explorers!
