Right in the heart of Valletta lies one of Malta’s hidden treasures—the National Library. This special place isn’t just a building full of books; it’s a gateway into Malta’s past, present, and future. With collections dating back to medieval times and extending into the digital age, the National Library preserves the stories and knowledge that shape our nation.

While it’s mainly a reference and research library, children and families visiting will be amazed by the historic surroundings and the incredible range of materials housed inside—from ancient manuscripts and maps to old newspapers, journals, and recordings by Maltese authors. It’s like stepping into a time capsule of Maltese culture!

The National Library is not only important for Malta’s own history, but also plays a key role in understanding the wider Mediterranean and European story. It welcomes curious minds of all ages, especially those eager to explore how Malta has grown and changed over the centuries.

A visit to the National Library is a meaningful outing for older children interested in history, writing, or storytelling. It’s a chance to connect with Malta’s heritage in a setting that inspires learning, discovery, and pride in our island’s unique past.
