Is-Salina Nature Reserve is a protected area and part of the Natura 2000 network, managed by BirdLife Malta. Located at the mouth of the Burmarrad valley, the site comprises 154,000 square metres of saline marshland and salt pans originally built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century.

The reserve, which has undergone extensive rehabilitation, serves as a crucial resting point for numerous bird species during migration, including spectacular sightings like the Greater Flamingo. Common observations include various gulls and terns, with herons and egrets visiting during migration.

Visitors can walk through the reserve freely every day. The site also features a Visitors’ Reception Centre (open on weekdays and at a small fee), and the recently opened Salina Salt Museum—Malta’s first—which chronicles the area’s history of salt production. Additionally, a newly restored wetland area with a birdwatching/photography hide is now open to the public.
