St Thomas Tower is a large, historically significant bastioned watchtower located in Marsaskala, Malta, and is managed by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (Malta’s national heritage trust).
Construction: The tower was erected in 1614 by the Order of St. John and is the third of the six Wignacourt towers built along the Maltese coast.
Original Purpose: Its strategic position on the il-Ħamrija headland was to thwart troop landings in the protected anchorages of Marsaskala Creek and St. Thomas’ Bay.
Later Modification: In the early 18th century, an artillery battery was integrated with the tower, reinforcing its defensive role.
The tower has been restored and converted into the Pirates and Corsairs Museum. This immersive museum brings Malta’s maritime history to life, featuring interactive exhibits, authentic artifacts, and captivating storytelling about the pirates and corsairs who once frequented the Maltese shores.
The museum offers a thrilling experience for visitors of all ages and was co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
